3 3 INTRODUCTION TO ECTS A. What is ECTS system? Trips of Polish students to foreign research centres have become a fact, and building of "Europe without borders" will also allow foreign students to study in Polish universities. An essential condition for full development of this form of education is full recognition of period of studies taken abroad and of awarded qualifications. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), designed as a pilot project within the framework of ERASMUS Programme, is the way to achieving this goal. This system is intended to contribute to improving the procedures and full recognition of period of studies taken abroad. The project designed is also supposed to make studying at Polish universities, who are implementing the ECTS system, easier for Polish students. "Full recognition" means that the period of studies taken abroad or in other Polish university is assumed as equal to relevant period of studies taken at the home university, independent of differences in the curricula. The implementation of ECTS is based on mutual trust between co operating universities, and each university selects its own partners for co operation. B. How does ECTS works? The implementation of ECTS is based on the following documents: Information Package containing information concerning courses of studies, curricula, studying regulations, conditions of enrolment, and administrative regulations of the university. The Package, being a sort of guide, is addressed to students and academic teachers from partner universities. It is intended to help them in selecting the appropriate curriculum and planning the studies, and in obtaining useful information. The package is updated annually, and it is issued in printed or electronic form. Learning Agreement binds home university, foreign university and the student. The student after choosing the university, where he wants to study for some period of time, fills the application form. In arrangement with the ECTS co ordinator of the home faculty, and basing on the information package of receiving university, he selects the course in that university. After the acceptance of application by the receiving university, all three parties (the student and both universities) sign an agreement concerning the programme of classes the student has to take and the number of ECTS points awarded for their passing. Transcript of records) is the basic document entitling the student to apply for full recognition of period of studies taken abroad. It is also the confirmation of the fact of studying abroad for future employers. This record contains a list of all the subjects and classes the student has attended, along with the number of points and marks awarded according to the marking system used in the given university. The combination of points and marks gives the "quality" and "quantity" description of student's achievements during the period of studies abroad. Student's records of passes from the home university, enclosed with the application form, are especially useful for making the decision by the receiving university. C. ECTS points and rules of their awarding The ECTS points are numerical values (from 1 to 60) associated with particular subjects based on the amount of work the student has to perform in order to pass. These points reflect the work each of the subject requires with respect to the total amount of work that the student has to perform in order to pass the whole academic year at the given university.
4 4 Therefore points are associated with lectures, practical classes, seminars, consultations, group and individual classes, field work, individual home or library work, and examinations. ECTS points are a relative (not absolute) measurement of work required from a student, because they describe, how large the part of work required in the whole academic year falls on the subjects in the curriculum. The work required in the whole year is equal to 60 points, which usually gives 30 points per semester. Points are given to all the taught subjects, if they are an integral part of the curriculum, under the condition that they are marked. ECTS points are associated with subjects, and they are given to the students after passing these subjects according to the rules of the receiving university. Points are not awarded for good marks the number of points for each subject is fixed and equal for all the students who pass this subject. The quality of work on passing this subject is expressed by marks. For every student participating in ECTS, both universities (home and receiving) provide the record of passes before the beginning of his studies at the receiving university and after his return. The home university recognises the number of points awarded for particular subjects at the partner universities, and in this way the points achieved at the receiving university are treated as equal to points, that students would have received at the home university. In such a way the home university recognises the period of studies taken by the student at the receiving university. Entry and Residence Regulations In general, students must hold a valid passport and visa entitling them to entry into the Republic of Poland and residence for the duration of their studies. However, the citizens of most European Union countries do not require visas. When student register at their higher education institution, they receive a certificate from the faculty and submit this to the passport office in the relevant city. More information concerning entry and immigration regulations is available from the relevant Polish embassy or consulate. Getting there On your arrival you should report to the Dean s Office of the relevant faculty. You can also seek assistance and advice from the Office for International Relations (al. Jedności Narodowej 22 a, Szczecin; tel. (+48 91) ; fax: (+48 91) ). Socrates /Erasmus Co ordinator : Swietłana Wojtczak Office for International Relations, al. Jedności Narodowej 22 a, Szczecin, tel.
