4 From the Director of the INSTITUTE OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS - Annual Report 1999 INSTITUTE OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS The Institute of Electronic Systems is the largest institute of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of WUT. It offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. Our teaching and research activities respond to the needs of today s electronics and computer engineering. As it will be seen from the prospectus, there are courses, and opportunities for studying and research in automatic measurement and test systems, semiconductor and smart sensors, flow measurements, optoelectronic circuits for sensing and telecommunication, computer engineering with artificial intelligence, neural networks and adaptive measurement systems, microprocessor systems, digital systems and digital signal processing, microwave networks and instrumentation, design software systems for VLSI integrated circuits and monolithic integrated circuits for high frequencies, and in analogue and pulse electronic circuits and systems. Our papers, conference presentations and scientific reports cover a wide variety of issues from distributed environmental monitoring systems involving optical fibre sensors to prototype development and production of signal processing blocks and monolithic high frequency integrated circuits for radar systems. In 1999 the Institute staff members gained 2 D.Sc. degrees, 4 Ph.D. degrees, published 7 scientific and teaching books, 32 journal papers, 104 papers in conference proceedings and 82 other publications. In the continuing programme of expansion and development of the Institute we reached new successes. This year two of our colleagues have completed habilitation procedures and have been awarded with the habilitation doctorate degrees. These two dissertations concerned robust and strongly consistent methods and algorithms for signal identification and selected issues in the metrology of contemporary analogy-to digital converters. Another four our young colleagues have received PhD degrees. It is also worth mentioning on distributed environmental monitoring system that was developed and organised by staff members of our Institute and other Departments of Warsaw Technical University. For their outstanding achievements in research and teaching, academics of the Institute 24 rewards of the Rector of our University. These developments are taking place thanks to strong involvement of the academic staff and administration. Students who come to the Institute of Electronic Systems will be joining a dynamic, expanding and lively institution, in which, I believe, we are managing to retain one of the long-standing traditions of our Institute, that of being the Institute with high standards for education and research and a friendly place with good relations between staff and students. 5 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1. Mission and organisation of the Institute For many years the teaching and research activities in the Institute of Electronic Systems have been concentrated in design, construction and maintenance of analogue, digital and mixed electronic systems and instrumentation, low and high frequency, microwave and optical, with many different applications: measurement and control, radio - and telecommunication, medical, and radar, with strong utilisation of digital, microprocessor and computer techniques and software engineering. In the Institute, there are performed teaching and research activities in the areas of CAD systems for VLSI analogue, digital and mixed electronic circuits and systems, micro electro-mechanical systems, design and measurements of monolithic microwave integrated circuits, computer controlled measurement systems, high frequency and microwave communication systems, numerical methods, digital signal processing for radar signals, and for biomedical signals, analogue and digital filtering, neural networks, artificial intelligence, molecular (DNA) computing, semiconductor and smart sensors, measurement and test systems, flow sensors and flow measurements, optoelectronic metrology, non-linear fiber optics, optical fiber devices, optical fiber sensors and image processing. Traditionally, the Institute is responsible for teaching basic electronic courses such as: Circuit Theory, Signals and Circuits, Electronic Circuits and Elements, Basics of Electrical Measurements and Electronic Measurements, but the main teaching and research involvement of the Institute is in the advanced and modern areas of electronics and information technology presented above. In a new two-stage teaching system at the Faculty the Institute is responsible for performance of two specialisations: Measuring Systems and Computer Engineering. In many aspects these two areas of science and engineering have common fields. Staff members of the Institute perform most of the teaching activities for these two specialisations, but also they teach and participate in classes of other specialisation. Like other institutes of the Faculty, the IES is structured into Divisions. The Institute has four Divisions: Circuit and Signal Theory Division incorporates three Research Groups: Research Group on Digital Systems and Signal Processing, Research Group on Non-linear Networks, Research Group on Analogue Signal Filtering. Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation Division incorporates one Research Group: Research Group on Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation. Electronic Circuits and Systems Division incorporates four Research Groups: Research Group on Electronic Analogue Circuits, Research Group on Digital Systems and Digital Signal Processing, Research Group on Pulse and Digital Equipment, Research Group on Biomedical Instrumentation. General Information The Circuit and Signal Theory Division deal with all aspects of circuit theory as well as modern problems of signal theory and digital signal processing. The main fields of interest are: Theory of linear networks, Analogue filtering (RC active filters, continuoustime and SC filters), Dynamics of non-linear circuits, Chaotic oscillations, Fractals, Fuzzy logic, Digital filters, Adaptive signal processing and its applications to radar s and measuring systems, Robust estimation methods and algorithms. The staff of the Division deliver lectures on these subjects at basic and advanced level. Also a set of student s laboratories is realised as an essential part of the courses. A number of individual laboratories and diploma works are also conducted. Research is based mainly on projects granted by the State Committee for Scientific Research and on projects granted from statutory funds. Group profile: Monolithic microwave integrated circuits - analysis, design and testing, Microwave measurement techniques and systems, High frequency and microwave communication systems, Computer aided analysis and design of microwave circuits. Historical note: The MCI Group was established in 1970 and, since then, has promoted 110 M.Sc. s and 14 Ph.D. s. Members of the Group have written more than 600 scientific papers and have taken active part in about 100 conferences. 65 research projects have been performed and many of them resulted in the unique microwave equipment fabricated by the MCI staff. Purpose: The MCI Group activities concern two main areas: education and scientific research. A comprehensive education program in the field of microwaves providing a coherent series of courses, discussions, seminars, independent studies or investigations leads to academic and professional 8

General Information There are two general areas of the research and teaching activities of the Electronic Circuits and Systems Division: Analysis and design of analogue and digital electronic circuits with a particular emphasis on the properties of electronic elements, Digital and analogue signal processing with a particular emphasis on physiological and biomedical signals. The work of the Division is carried out in four research/teaching groups, which are characterised briefly below. Research Group on Electronic Analogue Circuits (Head - Professor Andrzej Filipkowski, 7 members). The main field of research carried out within the group is related to various aspects of design of analogue electronic circuits. In particular the Group is focused on methodology of integrated circuits design and on computer modelling, the simulation, design and testing of circuits and systems for optimisation purposes. The Group has established co-operation with Carlton 9

9 University and other European and American Universities and is also participating in international research programs. Research Group on Digital Systems and Digital Signal Processing (Head - Tomasz Adamski D.Sc., 4 members). The Group s main areas of research can be grouped into four categories: Electronic Circuits (digital and pulse circuits, PLL circuits, analogue/digital converters and data acquisition boards), Digital systems (cryptology, microprocessor systems, parallel processing algorithms and systems, multimedia technology), Digital signal processing (solving of illconditioned problems, algebraic methods in DSP and its application in digital systems, processing of stochastic signals), Computer-aided measuring systems (virtual instruments, spectral analysers, correction of measurement systems based on DSP) and the problem of noise in electronic circuits and systems. Pulse power circuits, Electronic systems for the motor car industry, Computer simulators for systems and circuits design, Application of microprocessor technology in measuring equipment. Research Group on Biomedical Instrumentation (Head - Witold Wierzejski, Ph.D., 7 members). The main area of the Group s teaching and research is the development of methods and instrumentation dedicated to medical applications. The current research interests are focused on: Computer methods and instrumentation for neurosurgical diagnosis and neuromonitoring, Digital signal processing and measuring methods in audiology, Non-invasive methods of brain vessel diagnosis, Synthesis, analysis and processing of acoustic signals. The Group has established an international cooperation with the Neurosurgery Department of the University of Cambridge. Research Group on Sensors (Head - Professor Ryszard Jachowicz, 3 members) is involved in: Design, modelling, simulation and testing of sensors, Instruments and measuring systems for pressure, temperature, humidity and moisture measurements. 10

10 The main interest of the Group is focused on semiconductor and smart sensors, protocols and interfaces for smart sensor communication. Research Group on Industrial Measurement Systems (Head - Grzegorz Pankanin, Ph.D., 3 members) conducts research in designing and realisation of measurement systems dedicated for specific industrial applications. In the area of Group interest is: Sensors for physical quantities measurement (flow sensors, temperature and pressure), Signal processing systems, Data acquisition systems, means of results presentation and also problems of equipment control (pumps, valves, heaters). Research Group on Automatic Test Systems (Head - Konrad Hejn, D.Sc., 3 members) consists of researchers involved in analogue to digital conversion techniques: Delta - sigma modulators, Highly efficient decimators, DSP algorithms, VXI/SCPI technology. VHDL modelling and simulation are the main topics of the research conducted. To provide a bridge between DSP theory and the physical world of analogue to the digital converter s circuit the Group is always at the centre of interest. Research Group on Optoelectronic Circuits (Head Kazimierz Jędrzejewski, Ph.D., 9 members) is involved in: Optoelectronic metrology in laboratory and industry, Optical fiber technology, Solitons and nonlinear fiber optics, Optical fiber devices, Multicomponent and fluoride glass fibers, Optical fiber sensors, Image processing, Optical computing, Photonic oriented network measuring systems and interfaces under WWW. Research Group on Neural Networks and Adaptive Measurement Systems (Head - Stanisław Jankowski Ph.D., 3 members) conducts research in the fields of: Artificial neural networks (theory, applications and electronic implementation), Cellular neural networks and adaptive methods in coincidence measurement. Task Force Group on WWW (Head - Ryszard Romaniuk, Ph.D., 5 members). The Group works on several projects connected with Internet and particularly on WWW system. Research is carried on novel applications of interactive information techniques and multimedia in academic based WWW sites. The Group operates now two WWW servers nms. and kwarc.. The major two aims are: to rebuild and manage a new Institute Information WWW site and open a big nation-wide metrological server and network serving the academic community Independent Research Group on Artificial Intelligence Head: Jan J. In particular the following topics have been considered in detail: Molecular Computing, Molecular Electronics, Expert Systems, Evolutionary Algorithms, Machine Learning, Database Mining, Advanced Control. Molecular computing is a new field of research in computation intelligence. In this approach wellestablished tools of molecular biology are used to solve problems of computer science. A central idea behind much of molecular computing is its promise of implementation of massive parallelism and associate memory. Thus it may be a challenge for traditional digital computers. In our research we have introduced a novel application of molecular computing to problems of expert systems. Biochemical reactions on DNA strands were used to realise the backward chaining algorithms. Evolutionary Algorithms can be divided into three areas: Genetic Algorithms (GA), Evolution Strategies (ES), and Genetic Programming (GP). They have developed applications in global optimisation. In the 11

11 research on GA and ES new algorithms based on concept of chromosome age has been introduced. The process is controlled by the tage of optimisation. These methods lead to a significant reduction of the computation effort needed to achieve comparable results. To improve GA technique, an approach based on applying GP methodology to find the best GA accommodation of population size are proposed. The structure for global optimisation has been developed. It enables better results to be obtained in comparison with standard approaches. Several applications of evolutionary algorithms are addressed, such as: microwave circuits design, graph theory and telecommunication. 12
