Only six cases have been reported so far and, of those, three are known to occur in a single genus, Empoasca, in the small island of Madeira. Parthenogenesis is believed to be common on islands because a single colonizer individual is sufficient to establish a new population. Nevertheless, although asexual organisms are supposed to be good colonizers, there is no evidence in support of mainland populations as the real source of asexual island colonizers. To test this colonization and growth advantage hypothesis, karyotype analysis and distribution patterns of unisexual and bisexual taxa in Macaronesian archipelagoes (Azores, Madeira, Canary Il and Cape Verde) were evaluated through field work studies and compared with those from south Iberian Peninsula. The results showed that the three parthenoforms, named morphotype A, B, and C, are apomictic being two of them triploids (A and B) and one probably diploid (C). The patterns of distribution show that Madeira is the only archipelago with 3 unisexual taxa; of these one (C) is present in Canary Islands and other two (A and B) occur in Azores. In Cape Verde, a different morphotype is present which seems to be a new parthenoform while in Iberian Peninsula unisexual taxa were not found. The results suggest that these parthenoforms did not originate in nearby mainland areas but probably emerged within these islands as a successful strategy of reproduction. Finally, also two genera in the family Psyllidae include species able to transmit important phytoplasmas to fruit trees. Phytoplasmas are transmitted in a persistent propagative way; in addition, also a transovaric pathogen transmission has been demonstrated for some species. Insect vectors of phytoplasmas may be monophagous, oligophagous, or polyphagous and can transmit one or more phytoplasmas; moreover a single phytoplasma can be vectored by different insects, with several implications on disease epidemiology.moreover phytoplasma-vector interactions are complex and, besides affecting transmission efficiency, they can have a positive or negative influence on the fitness of the vector itself. In the last years, a lot of research has focused on different aspects concerning vectors which are well-known, while only little new information has emerged regarding other insects which are presumed or potential vectors. In several agricultural situations, it is not always possible to explain in a complete and satisfactory way why some phytoplasmoses are rapidly or slowly spreading, based on the knowledge of the few known vectors.
