2 8 The years from 1960 to 1971 T. Konopka, M. Abkowicz The 15 th anniversary of dentistry in the postwar Wrocław was the opportunity to launch the first jubilee volume of the Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatologiczny (Fig. 1). The founder, Prof. Tadeusz Owiński, was the editor-in-chief of the inaugural issue of annals (Fig. 2). A select editorial board included the future professors: Adam Masztelarz DMD, Stanisław Potoczek MD DMD, Franciszek Mraz DMD, Tadeusz Pawela MD DMD. The cover design, which lasted until 2001, was done by Stanisław Szuba MD DMD. The magazine was published by the Lower Silesia Branch of the Polish Stomatological Association. Prof. Tadeusz Owiński launched the magazine with a reminiscent article summarising fifteen years of academic dentistry in the post-war Wrocław. In that time, the Wrocław s dentistry was rebuilding the headquarter on the foundation of the Institute of Dentistry working prior to the war, recreating teaching and scientific personnel, as well as organisational structures within the university and the Polish Stomatological Association. The scientific part of that volume consisted of 7 papers: Franciszek Mraz described the case of healing over the jaw cavernous tumour, Kazimiera and Tadeusz Pawela presented a topic of third molars purulent inflammation, Alicja Badurowa discussed a treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis with the use of adrenal cortex preparations, Stanisław Potoczek discussed the popularisation principles Fig. 1. After two years of break, the second volume of the Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatologiczny was launched in It contained papers presented during the VI congress of the Section of Dental Surgery PTS. The last, third volume of the Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatologiczny was issued in It was composed of 32 papers, with a dominance of dental surgery topics, among others, one of the first papers of Tadeusz Pawela on eosinophilic granuloma. The annual magazine changed the title into Wrocławska Stomatologia in 1965 (Fig. 3). A select editorial board included: editor-in-chief Prof. Tadeusz Owiński Ph.D., editorial secretary: Assistant Professor Stanisław Potoczek Ph.D., Assistant Professor Adam Masztalerz Ph.D., Noemi Wigdorowicz-Makowerowa Ph.D., Assistant Professor Tadeusz Pawela Ph.D., Bogumił Płonka DMD, Ph.D. and Franciszek Mraz DMD, Ph.D. In that year, the editorial policy regarding the review process was presented for the first time. In the years 1966/1967, the joined jubilee issue summarizing the first twenty years of dentistry in the post-war Wrocław was published. Since 1970, the abstracts of papers in Russian have not been any more required. In the years from 1966 to 1971, over 30 papers were issued regularly. In 1971, even the double issue (the first issue was dedicated to a topic of teeth removal in the context of general medicine and technical dental aspect) was published. In that period, the authors of all papers were the academic members of Medical University. Apart from typically dental topics, the magazine covered also the problems of histopathology, anaesthesiology and anthropology. The papers, which in the future will become the greatest achievements of Wrocław s Dentistry School, are presented through the pages of the Wrocławska Stomatologia . Certainly they include publications of Prof. Noemi Wigdorowicz- -Makowerowa dedicated to fluoride prophylaxis for caries, papers of Prof. Stanisław Potoczek on the relationship between general diseases and periodontitis, first papers of Prof. Adam Mastalerz on orthodontic treatment with the use of a fixed appliance, and papers of Assistant Professor Bogumił Płonka Ph.D. presenting an original Wrocław s method for the treatment of endentulous patients. The years from 1972 to 2001 The editor-in-chief of the Wrocławska Stomatologia changed in This function was taken by Prof. Stanisław Potoczek (Fig. 4). Prof. Tadeusz Owiński (editor of the Training Department) and Prof. Adam Mastalerz (editor of the Scientific Department) became vice-editors-in-chief. Upon resignation of Prof. Tadeusz Owiński from the editorial function in 1975, the newly selected editorial board, which would manage the Wrocławska Stomatologia for the next 20 years, was chosen. In the years , a joined volume of the magazine was published containing, among others, historical articles on the development of the Department of Dental Prosthetics, Department of Orthodontics, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Conservative Dentistry. For 40 th anniversary of the Wrocławska Stomatologia in 2000, Prof. Stanisław Majewski from Kraków wrote a special editorial article entitled Alma Mater Jagiellonica kolebką polskiej stomatologii uniwersyteckiej (Alma Mater Jagiellonica the place where the Polish academic dentistry began). Upon retirement of Prof. Bogumił Płonka and his resignation from the function of editor-inchief in 2001, Tomasz Konopka DMD, Ph.D. became a new editor-in-chief, and it was him to issue the last annals of the magazine under the name of Wrocławska Stomatologia. In the years from 1960 to 2001, 1335 papers were published in total in the Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatologiczny and then in the Wrocławska Stomatologia. They consisted of: 346 (25.9%) of original papers, 532 (39.8%) of review papers, 346 (25.9%) of clinical cases and 110 (8.2%) of other papers. In those years, the magazine was the main source of review papers for doctors at the time of specialisation. The Wrocławska Stomatologia contained almost exclusively the articles of the academic members of faculties and institutes of the Wrocław Medical University. It is a permanent contribution to the academic achievement of Polish dentistry. The years from 2002 to 2012 In 2001, from the initiative of Prof. Leszek Paradowski, the former Rector of Wrocław Medical University, a character of the magazine was changed into definitely more scientific and relat-

The style and format of the magazine were changed essentially (Fig. 6). Since the beginning papers in English were also published (in 2002 there were four of them). At the end of 2002, the magazine became available in the first two bibliographical databases, and it obtained 2 points in KBN classification and 2.15 points Index Copernicus. In the years , the Dental and Medical Problems was issued every half a year, whereas since 2004 quarterly. In 2004 the most interesting papers from the 48 th Congress of the GIRSO (Groupèment Internationale pour la Recherche Scientifique en Stomatologie et Odontologie) were published through the pages of the magazine. In that way the number of foreign publications increased. As the tendency is to publish articles in English, since 2006 this language has become obligatory for clinical cases, and since 2012 also for review papers. In the first issue, the articles documenting the development of all academic units of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Wrocław were published. Since 2011, the magazine Dental and Medical Problems has been indexed in two international bibliographical databases Scopus and DOAJ. Since 2002, the best original papers have been awarded. The chapter consisting of: Prof. Stanisław Potoczek, Prof. Bogumił Płonka, Prof. Tomasz Konopka, Prof. Adam Masztalerz (until 2004), Hanna Gerber-Leszczyszyn MD, Ph.D. (until 2008), Associate Professor Jan Wnukiewicz ( ), Prof. Thomas Gedrange (since 2011) choose the best original paper of the year from papers nominated by the reviewers. Table 1 presents the papers awarded in the years This list gives an indication on the type of preferred subject matters, i.e. the relationship between medicine and dentistry. In the years from 2002 to 2012, 891 papers were published in total in the Dental and Medical Problems. They consisted of: 490 (54.9%) original papers, 242 (27.2%) review papers, 135 (15.1%) clinical cases and 23 (2.8) other papers. A comparison made between a dominant type of papers published before 2002 and after this date indicates that the magazine s profile changed from the instructional into the scientific one, which tries to become popular also abroad. In the years , 50 volumes of the dental journal were published in Wrocław papers were published in total: 825 original papers (37%), 775 review papers (34.8%) and 481 (21.6%) clinical cases. Many famous authors of Polish dentistry started the career through the pages of the magazine. These publications enabled many authors to get a scientific promotion. Such situation is a practical contribution into developing Polish dentistry and dentistry as a part of medical science. It is also a reason for pride and giving thanks to people who helped us to succeed. We would especially like to thank the Authors of published papers, because due to their work the consecutive editorial boards could have worked. The dental journal in such an academic centre as Wrocław must continue to last, because we have a strong and reliable foundation on which to grow.
