4 From the Director of the INSTITUTE OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS The Institute of Electronic Systems is the largest institute of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of Warsaw University of Technology. It offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. Our teaching and research activities respond to the needs of today s electronics and computer engineering. As it will be seen from the prospectus, there are courses, and opportunities for studying and research in automatic measurement and test systems, semiconductor and smart sensors, flow measurements, optoelectronic circuits for sensing and telecommunication, computer engineering with artificial intelligence, neural networks and adaptive measurement systems, microprocessor systems, digital systems and digital signal processing, microwave networks and instrumentation, design software systems for VLSI integrated circuits and monolithic integrated circuits for high frequencies, and in analogue and pulse electronic circuits and systems. Our activities in these topics are very much hardware oriented and devoted to practical applications in medicine, radar, radio communication, distributed environment monitoring systems etc. Members of the Institute staff are devoted teachers and researchers. Today our academic staff includes 11 professors, 42 assistant professors and 3 assistants. In 2001 the Institute staff members published 12 scientific and teaching books, 30 journal papers and 57 papers in conference proceedings. For their outstanding achievements in research and teaching, academics of the Institute have gained 1 Reward of the Minister of National Education and 9 Rewards of the Rector of the WUT, and 1 Young Scientist Award from the Foundation for Polish Science. In the continuing programme of expansion and development of the Institute we have reached new successes. In 2001 our Institute gained a post of the Coordinator of the FP5 European Project System for European Water monitoring (SEWING) with 10 participating institutions from Poland and EU. This year we established a new laboratory - Laboratory of Fiber Bragg Gratings equipped with a high power 100 mw double frequency argon laser (244 nm). We signed also Agreements of Scientific Cooperation with the Deutches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY, Hamburg, Germany and with the Institute of Applied Physics of the Warsaw University. Our Ph.D. students are participating in common research programs devoted to electronic measurement systems involved in high energy physics experiments. These developments are taking place thanks to strong involvement of the academic staff and administration. Students who come to the Institute of Electronic Systems will be joining a dynamic, expanding and lively institution, in which, I believe, we are managing to retain one of the long-standing traditions of our Institute, that of being the Institute with high standards for education and research and a friendly place with good relations between staff and students. GENERAL INFORMATION INSTITUTE OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS - Annual Report Mission and organisation of the Institute In last years the teaching and research activities in the Institute of Electronic Systems have been concentrated in design, construction and maintenance of analogue, digital and mixed electronic systems and instrumentation, low and high frequency, microwave and optical, with many different applications: measurement and control, radio - and telecommunication, medical and radar, with strong utilisation of digital, microprocessor and computer techniques and software engineering. In the Institute, there are performed teaching and research activities in the areas of CAD systems for VLSI analogue, digital and mixed electronic circuits and systems, micro electro-mechanical systems, design and measurements of monolithic microwave integrated circuits, computer controlled measurement systems, high frequency and microwave communication systems, numerical methods, digital signal processing for radar signals, and for biomedical signals, analogue and digital filtering, neural networks, artificial intelligence, molecular (DNA) computing, semiconductor and smart sensors, measurement and test systems, flow sensors and flow measurements, optoelectronic metrology, non-linear fiber optics, optical fiber devices, optical fiber sensors and image processing. Traditionally, the Institute is responsible for teaching basic electronic courses such as: Circuit Theory, Signals and Circuits, Electronic Circuits and Elements, Basics of Electrical Measurements and Electronic Measurements, but the main teaching and research involvement of the Institute is in the advanced and modern areas of electronics and information technology presented above. In a new two-stage teaching system at the Faculty the Institute is responsible for performance of two specialisations: Measuring Systems and Computer Engineering. In many aspects these two areas of science and engineering have common fields. Staff members of the Institute perform most of the teaching activities for these two specialisations, but also they teach and participate in classes of other specialisation. Like other institutes of the Faculty, the IES is structured into Divisions. The Institute has four Divisions: Circuit and Signal Theory Division incorporates three Research Groups: Research Group on Digital Systems and Signal Processing, Research Group on Non-linear Networks, Research Group on Analogue Signal Filtering. Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation Division incorporates one Research Group: Research Group on Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation. Electronic Circuits and Systems Division incorporates four Research Groups: Research Group on Electronic Analogue Circuits, Research Group on Digital Systems and Digital Signal Processing, Research Group on Pulse and Digital Equipment, Research Group on Biomedical Instrumentation. General Information The Circuit and Signal Theory Division deal with all aspects of circuit theory as well as modern problems of signal theory and digital signal processing. The staffs of the Division deliver courses on this subject at basic and advanced level. Also a number of student's laboratories are realized as an essential part of these courses. Individual laboratories and diploma works are also conducted. The research and teaching activity of the Division is carried out in three groups: Research Group on Nonlinear Networks (Head - Professor Jacek Kudrewicz, 3 members) is involved in: Dynamics of nonlinear systems, Fractals in computer graphics. The main interest is focused on applications of bifurcation theory and chaotic dynamics to investigation of mathematical models of selected electronic systems, e.g. the phase-locked loops. Fractals methods and particular the idea of Iterated Functions System is applicated to compression of images and pattern recognition. Research Group on Analogue Signal Filtering (Head - Professor Aleksander Urbaś, 5 members) conducts research in: Theory of linear networks, Analogue filtering (RC active filters, continuous-time and SC filters), Fuzzy logic. The researches include methods of synthesis and design of the continuous-time blocs and filters adapted to the VLS C-MOS implementation, as well as stabilization and tuning circuits. Theoretical studies, computer simulation, measurements and parameter evaluation using the computer measuring system are also provided. Researches on fuzzy logic are devoted to fuzzy control theory and practice, fuzzy modeling and approximate reasoning methods. Theoretical works concern influence of different reasoning and defuzzificatioin methods on control results and model construction and exactness. Practical investigations are devoted to application of fuzzy microcontrollers and modeling of different physical and industrial processes. Research Group on Digital Methods of Signal Processing (Head - Professor Andrzej Wojtkiewicz, 9 members). The main subjects of interest of the Group include: New methods and algorithms for digital signal processing (optimal filtering, detection, estimation, tracking), Digital signal processing of radar signals, Adaptive signal processing and its applications in telecommunication and metrology, Robust methods for signal estimation and classification, In particular, the research activity of the Group is focused on design as well as hardware and software realization of digital systems for real-time processing of radar signals with the use of signal processors, industrial computers and programmable devices. Research in radar applications is carried out in cooperation with industrial institutes

Group profile: Monolithic microwave integrated circuits - analysis, design and testing, Microwave measurement techniques and systems, High frequency and microwave communication systems, Computer aided analysis and design of microwave circuits (linear and nonlinear). Historical note: The Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation Division was established in 1975 and, since then, has promoted 110 M.Sc. s and 15 Ph.D. s. Members of the Group have written more than 600 scientific papers and have taken active part in about 100 conferences. 65 research projects have been performed and many of them resulted in the unique microwave equipment fabricated by the MCI staff. Purpose: The Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation Division activities concern two main areas: education and scientific research. A comprehensive education program in the field of microwaves providing a coherent series of courses, discussions, seminars, independent studies or investigations leads to academic and professional degrees. The Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation Division also offers courses in computer-aided design (CAD) of microwave circuits, monolithic microwave integrated circuits and advanced measurement techniques for qualified professionals. The Microwave Circuits and Instrumentation Division conducts an extensive scientific and applied research within the microwave area and provides services in the design and development of a microwave communication equipment - such as receivers and low power transmitters in the frequency range up to 40 GHz. Main research topics: Modelling, design and testing of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (GaAs MMIC's) for communication systems, Advanced computer aided measurements of microwave semiconductor devices (scattering and noise parameter extraction, methodology of measurements, computer-controlled test systems), Novel microwave filter structures (filters employing dielectric resonators and high temperature superconductors), measurements of DR parameters, theory of coupled transmission lines, Synthesis of low noise microwave amplifiers, CAD of microwave circuits (methods and algorithms for linear circuit analysis and synthesis, optimisation methods, component models). Recent achievements: Development of a new method for small signal and noise characterization of two-ports in multistate radiometer system, Development of high dynamic range MMIC amplifiers, Development of correlation radar for investigation of layered dielectric media. Development of the K-band waveguide filters and diplexers in cooperation with MWTG Telecom, Canada. Development of the theory and realization of the dual mode planar filters using ring and patch type resonators. General Information There are two general areas of the research and teaching activities of the Electronic Circuits and Systems Division: Analysis and design of analogue and digital electronic circuits with a particular emphasis on the properties of electronic elements, Digital and analogue signal processing with a particular emphasis on physiological and biomedical signals. The work of the Division is carried out in four research/teaching groups, which are characterised briefly below. Research Group on Electronic Analogue Circuits (Head - Professor Jan Ogrodzki, 7 members). The main research activities carried out within the group are related to various aspects of design of analogue, switchmode, mixed signal circuits and microsystems. In particular the Group is focused on modelling, simulation and computer aided design of circuits and systems including electro-chemical microsystems. The Group has established cooperation with several European Centres and is participating in domestic as well as international research programs. Research Group on Digital Systems and Digital Signal Processing (Head Professor Tomasz Adamski, 4 members). The Group s main areas of research can be grouped into four categories: Electronic Circuits (digital and pulse circuits, PLL circuits, analogue/digital converters and data acquisition boards), Digital systems (cryptology, microprocessor systems, parallel processing algorithms and systems, multimedia technology), Digital signal processing (solving of illconditioned problems, algebraic methods in DSP and its application in digital systems, processing of stochastic signals), Computer-aided measuring systems (virtual instruments, spectral analysers, correction of measurement systems based on DSP) and the problem of noise in electronic circuits and systems. Research Group on Pulse and Digital Equipment (Head - Stefan Misiaszek, Ph.D., 5 members). The main subjects of interest of the Group include: Elements, circuits and systems of fast pulse technology, Design and analysis of wide bandwidth sampling circuits, Methods of computer aided modelling of fast switching elements and circuits, Pulse power circuits, Electronic systems for the motor car industry, Computer simulators for systems and circuits design, Application of microprocessor technology in measuring equipment. Research Group on Biomedical Instrumentation (Head - Antoni Grzanka Ph.D., 4 members). The main area of teaching and research activity is concentrated on the development of new methods and instrumentation dedicated to medical applications. Also some projects are carried out on the measurement and modelling of selected organs. The current research is focused on the following topics: Computer methods and instrumentation for neurosurgical diagnosis, modelling and

11 neuromonitoring with applications in postoperative intensive care, Data and signal processing and measurement methods for audiology, rhinology and foniatrics, Non-invasive acoustic methods for brain vessel diagnosis, Synthesis, analysis and processing of acoustic signals specially related to medical and musical applications. The Group has established international co-operation with the Neurosurgery Department of the University of Cambridge (UK) and Audiology Department University of Ferrara (Italy)

The main interest of the Group is focused on semiconductor and smart sensors, protocols and interfaces for smart sensor communication. Research Group on Industrial Measurement Systems (Head - Grzegorz Pankanin Ph.D., 3 members) conducts research in designing and realisation of measurement systems dedicated for specific industrial applications. In the area of Group interest is: Sensors for physical quantities measurement (flow sensors, temperature and pressure), Signal processing systems, Data acquisition systems, means of results presentation and also problems of equipment control (pumps, valves, heaters). Research Group on Automatic Test Systems (Head Professor Konrad Hejn, 3 members) consists of researchers involved in analogue to digital conversion techniques: Delta - sigma modulators, Highly efficient decimators, DSP algorithms, VXI/SCPI technology. VHDL modelling and simulation are the main topics of the research conducted. To provide a bridge between DSP theory and the physical world of analogue to the digital converter s circuit the Group is always at the centre of interest. Research Group on Optoelectronic Circuits (Head Kazimierz Jędrzejewski, Ph.D., 8 members) is involved in: Optoelectronic metrology in laboratory and industry, Optical fiber technology, Solitons and nonlinear fiber optics, Optical fiber devices, Multicomponent and fluoride glass fibers, Optical fiber sensors, Image processing, Optical computing, Photonic oriented network measuring systems and interfaces under WWW. Research Group on Neural Networks and Adaptive Measurement Systems (Head - Stanisław Jankowski Ph.D., 3 members) conducts research in the fields of: Artificial neural networks (theory, applications and electronic implementation), Cellular neural networks and adaptive methods in coincidence measurement. PERG Laboratory (Head - Ryszard Romaniuk Ph.D., 2 members). carries out research in the domain of distributed measuring systems and Electronics for HEP (High Energy Physics), maintain several web information and measuring servers under the address nms., perg.elka.pw.edu.pl. The Group cooperates closely with Dept. of Chemistry, Technical Physics, Environmental Engineering of our University and with Institute of Experimental Physics Warsaw University. In particular the following topics have been considered in detail: Molecular Computing, Molecular Electronics, Expert Systems, Evolutionary Algorithms, Machine Learning, Database Mining, Advanced Control. Molecular computing is a new field of research in computation intelligence. In this approach wellestablished tools of molecular biology are used to solve problems of computer science. A central idea behind much of molecular computing is its promise of implementation of massive parallelism and associate memory. Thus it may be a challenge for traditional digital computers. In our research we have introduced a novel application of molecular computing to problems of expert systems. Biochemical reactions on DNA strands were used to realise the backward chaining algorithms. Evolutionary Algorithms can be divided into three areas: Genetic Algorithms (GA), Evolution Strategies (ES), and Genetic Programming (GP). They have developed applications in global optimisation. In the research on GA and ES new algorithms based on accommodation of population size are proposed. The concept of chromosome age has been introduced. The process is controlled by the tage of optimisation. These methods lead to a significant reduction of the computation effort needed to achieve comparable results. To improve GA technique, an approach based on applying GP methodology to find the best GA structure for global optimisation has been developed. It enables better results to be obtained in comparison with standard approaches. Several applications of evolutionary algorithms are addressed, such as: microwave circuits design, graph theory and telecommunication
