Experiences resulted from the project developed by the authors, with the aim to build computer platform enabling generation of trainers-simulators for e-training of operators of inspection-intervention mobile robots are presented. Streszczenie W artykule omówiono potrzebę treningu operatorów systemów RISE i zaproponowano e-trening jako sposób jego realizacji. Przedstawiono uzyskane przez autorów wyniki projektu badawczego, mającego na celu zbudowanie komputerowej platformy do tworzenia trenażerów-symulatorów do e-treningu operatorów mobilnych robotów inspekcyjno-interwencyjnych. 1. Introduction Contemporary robots used in RISE field are of rather narrow autonomy and need to be driven by skilled operators. Furthermore, although RISE robots ability to autonomous operation will increase as control technology advances, and yet human operators have to interact with robots for covering tasks responding to altering needs of a mission. Thus, training of RISE robots operators is a necessity. Taking into account that the demand for skilled operators will increase because of increasing both number of robots and their applications, requirement for efficient and suitable for mass-use training methods appears. E-training methods will turn out to be very helpful in this situation. E-training is understood here as an extension of e-learning: e-learning consists in computer-network-based obtaining of knowledge, e-training has in view obtaining of operation skills. Similarly as in the case of e-learning, e-training systems will be able to serve large number of geographically dispersed learners, and self-paced courses accessed 24 hours a day, whenever they are needed, will be possible. 8 8 A. Kaczmarczyk et al. schools show, the use of flight and driving simulators software, even installed on PCs, enables to cut costs of training even by half. Propaedeutics to e-training in RISE is given by the project under development, named A platform for design of computer trainer-simulators for operators of inspection-intervention mobile robots, realized by the authors of the paper in the Institute of Mathematical Machines, Warsaw, Poland. Development of such computer platform, intended to enable designing trainers-simulators for training in operation of different types of mobile robots - finding their application in inspection-intervention missions conducted in municipal or industrial environment, as well as in missions of military or police character - and creation of software for them, is the aim of this project. One can anticipate that diverse types of robots, differing by kind of traction, load capacity, range, manipulation ability, equipment with sensors will be applied in these missions. A need to train significant number of persons in operation of these robots, and obtaining high proficiency in operation, will come into being particularly in police and military forces for the sake of possible contact with explosives and toxic substances creating dangers for operator, population, and environment. Training tasks require many hours of exercises with different types of robots. Conducting of such training with use of real robots would be unprofitable, and probably unfeasible for the technical and organizational reasons for difficulties of creation of all possible situations and coincidences with which an operator of robots has to cope. The use of trainers, simulating robots behavior in different situations and circumstances, will be a necessity. Such trainers, for different types and variants of robots, will have to be designed, manufactured, delivered to users and serviced, so establishing of an innovative enterprise of adequate profile will be justified. Computer platform being a subject of the project under consideration will be the basic manufacturing appliance of such enterprise. 2. Intelligent multi-level training The first research task of the project under consideration it was drawing up a methodology of multi-level training with use of trainers of different grade of perfection, taking advantages of technologies of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Application of multi-level training, introductory one with use of simplest and not so costly trainers, and at next levels more and more complex, closing to real robot operation, will enable reduction of training costs and facilitate training organization. For multi-level training the following types of trainers are to be used [1]: Trainers of the Level 1 built with use of typical PCs. VR technology is applied. Robot, its environment and control console are simulated. Trainers of the Level 2 built with use of PCs with real robot control consoles connected. VR technology is applied. Robot and its environment are simulated. Trainers of the Level 3 trainers of the Level 1 or 2 with application of AR technology - real robot in the real environment with simulated elements added. A trainee uses special helmet. In the case of use of trainers of the Level 1 and 2, realization of e-training is possible. Trainers of the Level 2, having application for e-training, should be equipped with simplified control consoles, e.g. typical consoles for computer

e-training in RISE 9 games. Description of present solutions of e-training of operators of vehicles and appliances is presented in [2]. Computer trainers enable to conduct intelligent training, it means such training in which obtaining and perfection of operation abilities is adjusted to individual capabilities of trainees. Training with use of computer trainers consists in realization by a trainee his/her individual program of training. Every program of training is a sequence of training tasks. An exemplary training task for mobile robots operators is lifting, with use of the robot s gripper, of a certain object, and putting it in a certain container. At the beginning of the training session the trainee is informed on the task to perform, as well as on time limits, grading scale, and penalty points for causing wrong events (e.g. collisions of robot with objects in its environment). The trainee, using virtual or real control console, performs training tasks of the character of a computer game, and after finishing them is informed about the score obtained. During execution of training tasks, the knowledge about trainee s progress is gathered, and on this basis a choice of the next task, or decision on the end of training is made. 3. Models of trainers-simulators Generation of simulator s software should be driven by robot s models [3], but new software: Environment Generator and Training Task Generator are necessary for precise definition of training tasks. This software creates files which describes a given environment and a required task. Robot s model itself may be created in two ways. If robot s designer applies CAE (computer-aided engineering software), it is possible to create a robot s model and to export the model in the form consistent with accepted standards; the model may be afterwards modified with use of Robot Model Modification Program. The second solution it is to build a model from a set of standard building blocks, which are subsequently put together by appropriate constraints with use of Robot Model Generator. Robot s model is composed of some sub-models: physical model, geometric model, sound model, models of sensors and models of actuators. If a real control console is not applied in a simulator, then robot s model should comprise a model of a virtual control console which is created with use of Virtual Console Generator. If a real control console is applied in a simulator, then robot s model should comprise a communication module which ensures two-way transfer of data between a robot s model and a real control console. As a result of the integration of files which describe a robot s model with models of an environment and a training task, an executable program is created, which after installation on simulator s hardware, operating under the supervision of Training Program Executor allows performing a training task by an operator. As it was explained earlier, training program is composed of training tasks. Connections among tasks are of dynamic nature: the choice of a next task (or a decision to complete the training) depends on the evaluation of the level of skills achieved by the trainee. Training programs are created by Training Programs Generator.

10 A. Kaczmarczyk et al. 4. Functional requirements for trainers-simulators and the platform Because of practical reasons simulators should be implemented on PC-class computers. Training tasks are to be performed in an interactive mode, in a realtime, with the 3-dimensional visualization of user s activities in a period of time no longer than 100 ms. This is a severe requirement, because a typical operator s fault like a hit of a robot in an obstacle causes the following operation to be performed: a collision detection, a computation of the consequence of the collision for a robot and an obstacle, rendering of the results on the screen. From authors experience it follows that a computational power of contemporary PC-class computers, equipped with fast multi-core processors, and additionally the ability of use of a computational power of multi-core processors in graphics cards, is sufficient to fulfill this time requirement. So, simulators may be implemented on PCs with sufficiently efficient graphics cards. Platform should be implemented on PCs not worst than PCs applied in simulators, as a system with distributed hardware architecture (computers connected by a fast local area network). A fundamental requirement concerning a platform it is to allow a design and a creation of software for simulators of the Level 1 and the Level 2 for land mobile robots. Simulators software shall guarantee the ability to perform an intelligent multilevel training and model driven creation of the software. Robot s models shall be created by the modification of robot s models generated by robot-oriented CAE programs or by Robot Model Generator which composes models from building blocks. Virtual Console Generator shall allow the use of buttons, switches, displays and joysticks. Environment Generator shall allow: modifications of environments (terrain shape and objects), definitions of any objects (shape, dimensions, mass) and placement of them in environments as static objects, introductions of bad light conditions (fog, smoke, fire etc). Training Tasks Generator shall allow unlimited definitions of events (both expected and treated as operator s faults) and any score designation linked with the events. Training Programs Generator shall allow: definitions of task sequence graphs with dependencies of some logical conditions which reflect levels of skills of trained operators, registrations of obtained results resulting form performed tasks and definitions of final ocean criteria. Other requirements follow: already existing system and application software shall be applied as intensively as possible, simulator s software shall be modular with well-defined standard export and import capabilities, the platform shall be open for modifications and enlargements. 5. Prototypes of the platform and of an exemplary trainer-simulator The prototype of the platform was implemented on PCs under MS Windows XP. Computers are connected by fast LAN with CORBA (TAO version) technology. The platform s software is based on MS Visual Studio 2005/2008 integrated programming environment, graphical libraries Open GL and GLUT,

A sample screen of Training Programs Generator With the use of the platform the software for simulators of the Level 1 and the Level 2 for the Inspector robot (made by Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements PIAP, Warsaw) was designed and generated. Work in progress concerns simulators software testing and elaborations of new training tasks and training programs. 6. E-training for RISE operators There are factors that make future e-training of RISE systems human operators specific, in some aspect different than discussed above e-training of mobile robots operators. One can expect RISE robots development will lead toward their growing intelligence and cognitive skills, so operation has to be conducted by humans at highest level of control. Human operators will interact with robots not only in acting phase but in planning phase as well. Moreover, RISE operators will work in the complex system, so have to interact also with superior levels of the system hierarchy. Multi-robots teams, as well as groups made up of robots and humans can be a subject of supervision and command by system operators. Thus, there is a need to develop adequate methods and means of e-training. Trainer-simulators, taking advantages of computer games technology and e-learning, are the obvious solution. Experiences obtained so far, both in the project discussed above and by other subjects - e.g. [4] - shows that it s purposeful and possible to develop a platform dedicated to generation of such trainers for RISE. Taking up the work upon this platform in coming years one should consider application of promising technological innovations such as use of an evolutionary mechanism [5], chaotic behavior decision algorithms [6], or fuzzification processes [7]. Especially interesting for e-training however not yet practically available [8] seems to be use of cloud computing, it means installation of

14 A. Kaczmarczyk et al. trainers-games on a supercomputer, and streamed them in real time online to distant cloud computers being thin-client devices, even iphones. This solution would enable e-training not only RISE operators, but also in the adequate extent common public which can be sometime a subject of risky interventions provided by the RISE; besides of such training the public first of all can be informed in attractive form about the RISE existence and function. Putting e-training for RISE operators into effect needs recognition of the RISE users requirements in the respect of training: profiles and numbers of trainees, taking into account operational needs of different functions and interfaces of the system, as well as needs of certification of the system authorized operators. On this basis a concept of the training and certification should be prepared, and then an offer related to this matter, in connection with RISE dissemination and exploitation, should be formulated. 7. Conclusion Future EU projects in the RISE area should include undertakings that ensure preparation of well-trained operators of the RISE systems, and e-training methods are very useful to this aim. As experiences of the project conducted by the authors, as well as experiences of other subjects show, a computer platform enabling design of trainers-simulators and generation of software for them is the convenient solution to realize successfully such undertakings. 15 TECHNIKI KOMPUTEROWE 1/2009 Janusz Będkowski, Andrzej Masłowski Institute of Mathematical Machines, Warsaw, Poland Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Mechatronics, Warsaw, Poland Augmented reality approach for mobile multi-robotic system development and integration * Zastosowanie rzeczywistości rozszerzonej w projektowaniu oraz integracji systemów wielorobotowych Abstract In the following paper an idea for mobile multi-robotic system development and integration based on augmented reality techniques (AR) is discussed. The concept of the combination of real world and computer-generated data is shown; therefore, it can be used for multi robotic system design, where computer graphics objects are blended into the real environment in real time. A comprehensive toolkit to connect the physical and virtual world within AR using NVIDIA PhysX simulation is introduced. The advantage of the approach is not only live video images that are augmented by additional computer generated graphics, but also construction of the virtual environment based on real sensor data, that is used for virtual robots simulation and feedback into real robot sensing. For this reason it is expected that real robots can interact with virtual one. The result is: the AR-system that combines real and virtual robots, therefore the cost and the time of integration is going to be decreased. The result demonstrates the AR-system combined by real autonomous mobile robot equipped with 3Dmap sensors and camera video and virtual teleoperated caterpillar robot with 5DOF arm, which is simulated in the virtual environment built from real sensor data. The mobile robotic system is controlled from the real base station, from where all robots (real and virtual) are available to be controlled, and can interact each other. 1. Introduction The mobile robotic system development and integration tasks need a lot of effort because of its complexity. The problem appears when robotic system is being designed and developed by international consortium. The difficulty is determined by the need of transportation each part of the system to the place of the integration. For this reason we propose new approach that combines virtual robots with real robotic system. In our opinion it can improve the process of multi robotic system development and integration. Due to the framework for AR mobile multirobotic system design is a new concept we developed some necessary components to build such system. We designed the communication layer based on CORBA TAO which allows communication with robot based on Player/Stage. The 3D map building procedure is adapted to build 3D virtual environment for virtual robot with sensors simulation. New 3D obstacle avoidance system based on IFM PMD cameras is used for local mobile robot navigation. The simulation component based on NVIDIA PhysX is integrated with AR system. In our expectation AR approach should improve mobile multi-robotic system development and integration. Our proposed system has two objectives: to develop multi robotic system starting form design using simulation tools, afterwards the real components are integrated with simulation using AR techniques, in the final all virtual components should be replaced by real one, therefore final system should be created. Second objective is to deliver methodology for multi robotic system integration and evaluation using AR techniques. For this reason we introduce AR approach combining real base station, real autonomous mobile robot equipped with 3D map building system, and virtual teleoperated robot simulated in NVIDIA PhysX engine. All needed information from robots is available in the base station, also the interaction between real and virtual components is modelled. 2. Related works Augmented Reality approach applied for mobile robotics is a combination of real and virtual world. The representative developments where described in [1], [2] with overviews of tracking, overlays and applications. The AR applications are typically related with augmented human robot collaboration to evaluate robot plan by usage of combination video from robot with graphical models that represent additional information for robot operator. Various techniques for the registration of real and virtual content were proposed in [1]. The motivation for Photorealistic rendering versus Non-Photorealistic rendering in Augmented Reality applications was discussed in [3]. Numerous of AR approaches related to the interaction with mobile platforms are described in [4]. The development and experimentation of humanoid robot using AR approach was discussed in [5], where the recent advances in speed and accuracy of optical motion capture to localize the robot, track environment objects, and extract extrinsic parameters for moving cameras in real-time was described. The system enables safe, decoupled testing of component algorithms for vision, motion planning and control. The results of successful

Augmented reality approach for mobile multi-robotic system development 17 online applications in the development of an autonomous humanoid robot are also described in [5]. Development of the multi robotic systems is challenging task and requires a lot of effort concerning robot design and system integration. The program development environment for multiple robot-multiple application system was introduced in [6]. Due to the field of distributed mobile robotics has grown dramatically, several papers are focused on the topics of multi-robot systems [7], [8], [9], [10]. Additional open research issues in distributed mobile robotic systems were described in [11]. Numerous multi-robot frameworks [12], [13] are available for multi-robot system development ([14], [15], [16]). In this paper the new idea of combination of Augmented Reality approach with mobile multi-robotic system development is introduced, also new research issues are described. We believe that our results can improve the robotic system development and testing. 3. The AR - system overview The proposed AR system is multi agent system composed by AR-agents and real R-agents that interact each other. The NVIDIA PhysX engine is used to perform AR-agents simulation. The fundamental assumption is that the position of each agent is known, therefore data fusion from real sensors and simulated is possible. For the real robot localization purpose the SLAM algorithm [17], [18] based on LMS SICK 200 and odometry data is used. The position of AR-agent is given by the simulation. To simulate laser range finder the environment 3D model build from 3D data acquisition system has to be transferred into simulation engine. Fig. 1 shows general idea of proposed AR approach. Fig. 1: Scheme of AR approach. 1 real robot equipped with laser range finder, 2 real obstacles, 3 virtual robot, 4 virtual robot equipped with simulated laser range finder, 5 virtual 3D model of the real obstacles obtained by real robot, 6 augmented real laser range finder measurement with additional virtual measurement of virtual robot chassis (1+3).

18 J. Będkowski, A. Masłowski 4. Real robot For the experiment purpose, we equipped ATRVJr robot with several devices such as 3D PMD cameras, laser range finder LMS SICK 200 for localization and LMS LD 1000 for 3D map reconstruction (Fig.2). For the 3D local navigation purpose, we built 3D PMD sensor system compound from four PMD cameras (Fig.3). Each camera has 64x48 pixel array in which each pixel represents a time of flight (TOF) measurement defines the field of view for the sensor. The advantage of this approach is that the 3D local map situated in front of mobile platform is available each 100 ms. The local map is represented by 4 x 64 x 48 pixels array that project points of reference, capturing the entire image in three dimensions. Fig.2: Autonomous mobile robot equipped with 3D sensors for local navigation and 3D map building.

Augmented reality approach for mobile multi-robotic system development 19 Fig.3: 3D local navigation sensor system based on four 3D PMD sensors. 5. Environment model The 3D map is built based on the data delivered by SICK LD1000 laser mounted vertically on the robot chassis. The 3D map is constructed during robot motion. The accuracy of the map is strongly determined by SLAM algorithm, which delivers robot global position. Fig. 4 shows the visualization of the mobile robot and 3D environment. Fig. 4: Visualization of the mobile robot and 3D environment. Red points correspond to PMD 3D camera measurement, green triangles local 3D map, gray triangles saved model of the environment. 6. Virtual robot The virtual model of robot INSPECTOR is compound from rigid bodies connected via joints with angular and linear motors. Therefore, it is possible to manipulate all DOFs using control panel. The caterpillars are modelled by numerous wheel shapes in NVIDIA PhysX, therefore the behaviour of robot

20 J. Będkowski, A. Masłowski motion is similar to real one. Fig. 5 shows visualization of geometrical model of described robot that is used for HMI (Human Machine Interface) purposes. Fig. 5: Geometrical model of robot Inspector used in HMI. 7. Virtual laser range finder Fig. 6 shows simulation of laser range finder that computes distance between laser range finder position and virtual objects such as reconstructed 3D map and virtual robots. To give information about the real robot chassis into the simulation the additional rigid body has to be associated with it. The laser range finder simulation uses ray intersection mechanism to compute distances and additional noise to model physical parameters of real device. Fig. 6: Simulation of virtual laser range finder LMS SICK 200 in reconstructed 3D environment.

Augmented reality approach for mobile multi-robotic system development Augmented reality system The augmented reality system dedicated to multi robotic system development and integration is composed by real autonomous mobile robot ATRVJr equipped with 3D map sensors, real base station with robot Inspector console, and simulation of teleported robot Inspector with simulation of laser range finder. The system for composition of real video feedback from robot ATRVJr with simulation is developed using ARToolkit [19] (for camera calibration and positioning purposes). Fig. 7 shows control base station where operator can control each robot, real and virtual one. It is important to emphasize that virtual robot is visible in autonomous robot main camera view. Another advantage of proposed approach is the possibility of summarizing all system components in the main HMI program that visualizes robots position and sensor data. Fig. 7: The augmented reality system.

22 J. Będkowski, A. Masłowski 9. Discussion It is reasonable to use the simulation techniques for multi robotic system development. In the other hand the integration process should be done in real environment for better performance and validation. It is obvious that simulation is not able to replace experiments in real environment. For this reason, the multi robotic system augmented by simulated components is an alternative way and can potentially improve the process of testing and integration. AR techniques can be used as the middle layer between simulation and reality for multi mobile robotic system development and integration. Therefore, more complex and sophisticated systems can be designed using low cost resources. 10. Conclusion This paper introduced new AR approach for mobile multi-robotics system development and integration. The mobile robot ATRVJr equipped with 3D perception is shown, also the result of 3D map building and transfer to simulated environment is presented. The model of virtual teleoperated robot is shown. The general idea of AR system is introduced, also interaction between reality and virtual simulation is emphasized. The final experiment of AR system composed by real mobile robot, real base station, virtual teleoperated robot and simulation of robot perception based on 3D real data acquisition is presented. It is important to emphasize that such system can be used not only for robotic system development but also for advanced low cost training. Future work will be related to improve camera calibration, multi robot localization, 3D map building and reconstruction, robot navigation. We believe that introduced AR system can be used for several existing robotic systems development, testing and operator training. References [1] Green, S. A., M. Billinghurst, et al. (2007). Streszczenie W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono rezultaty rozbudowy robota mobilnego ATRV Jr dla celów ryzykownych interwencji w akcjach straży pożarnej. Omówiona została koncepcja hybrydowej architektury systemu w oparciu o komponenty Player (system serwerów i sterowników do urządzeń) oraz CORBA (wzorzec komunikacji obiektów rozproszonych). 1. Introduction View-Finder, which stands for "Vision and Chemiresistor Equipped Webconnected Finding Robots", is one of projects funded by the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme. Objectives for this project can by summarized as follows: inspection of fire or crisis grounds and chemicals and toxin detection; map building and scene reconstruction, interfacing and fusing local command information and external information sources; Human Interface, integrating information search and robot control, autonomous robot navigation and multi robot cooperation; Human-Robot cooperation and interaction. The software architecture is improved for ViewFinder Application [1], [2]. The improvement is based on the investigation of the State of the Art hardware drivers for ATRV Jr functionality and its implementation. The need of research is motivated by the incompatibility between ATRV Jr Mobility software and ViewFinder System components. The main goal of increased performance is achieved by combining State of the Art Player/Stage driver for the RFLEX ATRV Jr on-board real time controller with ViewFinder system based on CORBA/CoRoBa/Mailman [3], [4] * Tekst wystąpienia przygotowany na spotkanie robocze RISE 2010 (20-21 styczeń 2010, Sheffield).

26 J. Będkowski et al. communication technologies. The usage of player s driver determines independence of the ViewFinder System from indoor autonomous mobile platform. It means the robot is seen by the ViewFinder System as a set of functionalities, therefore another robot with similar functionalities can be used. 2. Robotic platform - developed ATVRJr For purposes of the ViewFinder project ATRV Jr (Fig. 1) has been adapted to host several devices from the partners. The modifications of the construction were needed, because on the top of the robot there was no space for additional equipment. Fig. 1: ATRV Jr robot. The special chassis was designed and built to create desired space. It consists of several aluminum profiles, connected with T screw joints. Due to the flexibility of chassis components, it is possible to configure several equipment configurations. Fig. 2: Design of the new ATRV Jr chassis with additional devices.

ATRV Jr mobile robot for Fire Fighter Services 27 In green, there are marked basic devices, which have been added for the improvement robot functionality. These devices are: Sony pan/tilt camera (1), Wi-Fi router (2), Digital Video System (3), aluminum chassis (4), wireless communication device (5) with antenna (6), PCU (7), chemical sensor (8), 3D laser range finder. The construction of the chassis is very flexible and it can be modified in order to provide desired space for other devices or relocate existing equipment. Fig. 3: ATRV Jr equipped with 3D sensors. 3. Software architecture The main advantage is the compatibility between several communication techniques such as CORBA/CoRoBa, Player/Stage, and Mailman. It was done by usage of CORBA middleware as the core of the architecture. The main advantage of proposed approach is that the architecture provides several communication models such as client server (peer to peer), producer consumer, mixed: client/server server/client. For this reason, it is possible to implement complex control software with flexible communication scheme. The comparison between Player, CORBA and Mailman was performed during several robot trials with different software configurations. It is important to emphasize, that the architecture of the system allows defining different configurations that can be switched on the fly Player characteristic The Player provides almost full set of needed hardware drivers, therefore it is very useful software that supports mobile robot development. The limitation is determined by client-server communication between components. For this reason we are forced to request the server each time we would like to have new information. Therefore, the local LAN of mobile robot can be potentially overloaded by the amount of data exchange between components. Another disadvantage is related to the video acquisition, compression and sending via wireless network. We observed that Player was not robust enough to send video in satisfied time (10 fps), even sometimes the communication was lost with no clear reason.

28 J. Będkowski et al CORBA Characteristic The CORBA provides several communication models (client server, producer consumer, mixed: client/server server/client) that can be useful in development the flexible software architecture of the mobile robot. The main difference between client - server and producer - consumer is related to the separation between consumer and producer done by event channel. This solves the problem with handling the exceptions during data exchange. It is important to realize that event (producer - consumer) is more robust than request (client - server) in real time applications, essentially because of the prioritization Mailman characteristic The Mailman was designed for data exchange between two subnets, via wireless communication with low bandwidth. The prioritization mechanism allows designing real time application. The concept is based on the usage of UDP protocol. Additional software mechanisms solve the problem of acknowledgement of the requests. Because Mailman is only communication channel, it is needed to develop the hardware drivers using other communication techniques Results of trials Several experiments where performed for Player/CORBA/Mailman comparison. The important observation is that Player provides robust hardware drivers of on the shelf ATRV Jr mobile robot. Unfortunately, the system based only on Player cannot fulfill V-F requirements. The video from existing hardware cannot be sent in real time. The additional components based on CORBA such as VideoCorbaServer and HighLevelController improved the software architecture, therefore it satisfies the V-F requirements. The VideoCorbaServer with built in compression method provides video stream, that can be visualized (real time) in CorbaClient installed on the PC located in Base Station. The HighLevelController receives the control data from Base Station and executes it via Player components. The architecture based on the Player/CORBA components fully satisfy the V-F requirement, where additional CORBA components solve the problems related to the well-known Player disadvantages. The improvement based on the replacement CORBA wireless communication by Mailman communication should boost the performance of data exchange, because of the two reasons: usage of UDP protocol and prioritization. The main advantage of the usage of the Mailman is the possibility of the fast robotic system reboot (the service discovery method in Mailman is faster in the comparison to service discovery method in CORBA). The main achievement is the knowledge how to combine the existing techniques to improve the robotic system with the reduction of the effort needed to reinvent existing solutions. 4. Robot functionalities 4.1. Robot navigation Robot navigation needs its ability to determine its own position in its frame of reference and then to plan a path towards some goal location. In order to navigate, the mobile robot requires representation of its environment i.e. a map of the environment and the ability to interpret that representation. The art of navigation consists of particular robot competences like:

ATRV Jr mobile robot for Fire Fighter Services 29 ability to self-localizing in the environment, which requires map-building and map-interpretation; ability to path planing, and local obstacle avoidance. Localization denotes the robot's ability to establish its own position and orientation within the frame of reference. Path planning is effectively an extension of localization, in that it requires the determination of the robot's current position and a position of a goal location, both within the same frame of reference or coordinates. Map building can be in the shape of a metric map or any notation describing locations in the robot frame of reference. In this study we will present the most popular approaches to global path planning using A* and Dijkstra s algorithms and two approaches to local obstacle avoidance using VFH (Vector Field Histogram) and Fuzzy ARTMAP. It is worth to mention main advantages of two algorithms to global path planning. A* algorithm is preferred when searching the shortest path from the position point of the robot to the target point. It is experimentally proved to get the shortest path in reasonably short time using this algorithm. On the other hand, Dijkstra s algorithm is preferred when the robot needs to search shortest paths to many targets and choose one on this basis Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) The experiment was performed using adapted and integrated SoA SLAM [5] algorithm in the building of MECA Royal Military Academy, Brussels, Belgium. The new system was configured to use several devices such as motor drives of ATRV Jr, laser measurement system SICK LMS 200, ring of front sonars and video camera. To this experiment, SLAM based on the particle filter was used. Because of the bounded memory of the robot s on-board computer the maximum number of particles was set to 250. The generated map was of the size 50 [m] x 50 [m] with resolution of 10 [cm]. The SLAM algorithm performs online and its results are presented in the following figures. Chosen SLAM algorithm working online satisfies the needs for localization of the robot and 2D map building D Map Building The ATRV Jr is equipped with sensors for building 2D and 3D maps. The 2D map is delivered to the HigLevelController as occupancy grid map where obstacles are denoted as +1, free space 0, unknown -1. The idea of summarizing the maps (laser/obstacle, temperature, chemical concentration) was introduced. The new concept is related to adding the projection of the 3D map onto 2D sum of maps. Therefore, additional information concerning 3D obstacle can be used for navigation purpose.

30 J. Będkowski et al. Fig. 4: Left - 2D map view and sensors visualization of the robot. Right camera view. The main achievement is the method of high accurate 3D model acquisition and reconstruction that can help Fire Fighter services during risky intervention. Following figures shows the results of performed experiments: Fig. 5: Visualization of the 3D reconstruction of aircraft.

Conclusion The development of the autonomous mobile robot ATRV Jr has been discussed in the paper. The robot is equipped with sensor dedicated to support Fire Fighter Services during hazardous tasks such as inspection of crisis area. The concept of the hybrid software architecture based on Player and CORBA is shown. The new architecture allows to combine several devices from different vendors without high effort of integration. The basic functionalities of the system such as SLAM, autonomous navigation, 3D map building and visualization in the HMI has been

ATRV Jr mobile robot for Fire Fighter Services 33 demonstrated. It is important to emphasize that the software is scalable, so it is possible to build multi robotic system based on the ATRV Jr nodes that communicate each other to acquire more information from the environment. 35 TECHNIKI KOMPUTEROWE 1/2009 Andrzej Abramowicz Instytut Maszyn Matematycznych Analiza przydatności metod e-learningowych i multimedialnych w certyfikowanych szkoleniach ECDL On usefulness of e-learning and multimedial methods in certified ECDL courses Streszczenie W artykule przedstawiono analizę przydatności narzędzi IT w szkoleniach prowadzących do uzyskania zdobywającego coraz większą popularność certyfikatu ECDL. Abstract The article discusses the usefulness of the IT methods in courses leading to world popular ECDL certificate. On the basis of representative examples of education software, the set of conditions was stated for such a type of programs to be most useful and educationally effective. Assuming fulfilling these conditions, general conclusions concerning usefulness of IT methods were formulated. 1. Istnieje wiele pozycji ogólnie omawiających m.in. rolę Internetu w procesie nauczania i samokształcenia oraz społeczno-pedagogiczną użyteczność technologii informacyjnych [7]. Wielu autorów pisze o edukacyjnych aspektach multimediów, wpływie postępu technologicznego w IT na postrzeganie roli multimediów, specyfice przekazu multimedialnego w praktyce edukacyjnej [5]. Autorzy zastanawiając się nad wpływem technik informatycznych na poziom kształcenia abstrahują zazwyczaj od konkretnych rozwiązań, bądź też przedstawiają wybrane przykłady podkreślając zalety konkretnych szkoleń [9].

36 A. Abramowicz Ciekawe są rozważania dotyczące przyszłości: kierunków rozwoju platform edukacyjnych [4], strategii testowania (inteligentne testy) [8], zastosowania technologii VirtualLab [4], [6]. Wciąż jednak zdaje się dominować w publikacjach pewien rodzaj fascynacji nowymi możliwościami w edukacji związanymi z zastosowaniem IT.

Ostatnie punkty to ogólne wnioski dotyczące przydatności narzędzi IT w przypadku tytułowych szkoleń oraz krótkie podsumowanie. 2.

Stosując się do powyższych definicji i uwag, tytuł niniejszego tekstu powinien więc brzmieć: Analiza przydatności technik e-learningowych w certyfikowanych szkoleniach ECDL. Pozostawiamy go jednak w niezmienionej postaci mając świadomość funkcjonujących przyzwyczajeń ECDL Europejski Certyfikat Umiejętności Komputerowych ECDL jest międzynarodowym certyfikatem zaświadczającym, że jego posiadacz opanował podstawowe umiejętności obsługi komputerów osobistych i potrafi je wykorzystywać w codziennej pracy. Certyfikat ważny bezterminowo wydaje Stowarzyszenie Europejskich Profesjonalnych Towarzystw Informatycznych CEPIS (Council of European Professional Informatics Societies), reprezentowane w Polsce przez Polskie Towarzystwo Informatyczne (PTI). Wymagania i procedury uzyskania ECDL są takie same we wszystkich krajach. Grafika menedżerska i prezentacyjna (M6) Moduł 7.

Analiza przydatności metod e-learningowych i multimedialnych 39 najpopularniejszym obecnie edytorem MS Word. Oczywistym jest jednak warunek, aby procesor tekstu, którego znajomość taka osoba deklaruje, miał możliwości funkcjonalne pozwalające na wykonanie zadań wynikających z sylabusa. Egzaminy przeprowadzają akredytowani egzaminatorzy, w Polsce posiadający akredytację PTI. Zdawać je można w dowolnej kolejności i w dowolnych krajach. Oprócz omówionego powyżej, historycznie pierwszego i naszym zdaniem jedynego istotnego i celowego, funkcjonują również inne, z oczywistych powodów mniej popularne, typy certyfikatów: ECDL Advanced. Zakres tematyczny Moduły 3, 4, 5, 6 na poziomie zaawansowanym. ECDL CAD. Zakres tematyczny wykorzystanie narzędzi CAD do tworzenia rysunków dwuwymiarowych. ECDL e-citizen. Zakres tematyczny podstawy korzystania z Internetu; program specjalnie opracowanym dla ludzi z ograniczoną wiedzą z zakresu informatyki. ECDL WebStarter. Zakres tematyczny wykorzystanie narzędzi języka HTML do tworzenia stron internetowych.

Analiza przydatności metod e-learningowych i multimedialnych 41 ludzie w wieku umownie produkcyjnym, osoby w starszym wieku.

Wymaga to oczywiście natychmiastowej korekty. 1. ECDL. Dystrybutor: Bit Media. Kurs pełny. Wersja autonomiczna na płycie. Szkolenie rekomendowane przez PTI. Uruchamiane z płyty, nie wymaga instalacji. 2. MS Office Dystrybutor: Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. Kurs pełny. Wersja autonomiczna na płytach. Wymaga instalacji. 3. ECDL. Dystrybutor: CustomGuide, Minneapolis, MN, USA. Wersja Demo. Kurs na platformie. 4. Elementy MS Office (podstawy). Dystrybutor: CZN (Centrum Zdalnego Nauczania) UJ. Kurs na platformie. 5. ECDL. Dystrybutor: KCE ECDL (Krakowskie Centrum Egzaminacyjne). Kurs w trakcie realizacji. Kurs na platformie. 6. ECDL. Dystrybutor: Third Force, Londyn. Wersja Demo. Kurs na platformie. 7. ECDL. Dystrybutor: Wiedzanet, lic. Thomson NETg. Wersja Demo, ale pełne wersje wybranych modułów. Kurs na platformie. 5 Oczywiście można sobie zadać pytanie dlaczego, ale problem zawartości sylabusów i doboru pytań egzaminacyjnych, to temat sam w sobie.

Analiza przydatności metod e-learningowych i multimedialnych ECDL. Dystrybutor: WSiP. Bardziej skomplikowane zadania wymagają wykonywania sekwencji operacji z użyciem myszy prowadzących do uzyskania określonego efektu. Oczywiście osoba testowana musi postępować ściśle według założonego algorytmu: np. próba wykonania operacji w inny niż założony sposób (nawet jeśli jest to sposób bardziej efektywny) kończy się komunikatem o błędzie. Operacje wykonywane są na symulowanych obiektach.

44 A. Abramowicz Rys. 1. Przykład elementarnej jednostki szkoleniowej: kurs nr 1 Zrzut ekranu na rys. 2 jest charakterystycznym przykładem fragmentu testu (Moduł 3). Rys. 2.

Materiały edukacyjne obejmują: tekst zawierający rysunki i zrzuty ekranu, filmy instruktażowe, kilka rodzajów interaktywnych apletów. Charakterystyczny fragment jednostki szkoleniowej kursu nr 4 przedstawia zrzut ekranu na rys. 4.

46 A. Abramowicz Rys. 4. Przykłady materiałów edukacyjnych: kurs nr 4 Poniższy rysunek przedstawia kadr z filmu instruktażowego. Rys. 5. Rys. 6 przedstawia jedną z elementarnych jednostek szkoleniowych.
