5 From the Director of the Institute of Electronic Systems The Institute of Electronic Systems of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology at the Warsaw University of Technology offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. It offers also its technical and intellectual resources for the industry. Our teaching and research activities respond to the needs of today s electronics and computer engineering. The Institute offers courses, and opportunities for studying and research in: automatic measurement and test systems, microsystems, semiconductor and smart sensors, flow measurements, measurement and control systems for experiments in high-energy physics, neural networks and adaptive measurement systems, optoelectronic circuits for sensing and telecommunication, adaptive signal detection and estimation methods, modeling of radar disturbances, digital signal processing for radar systems, RF and microwave monolithic integrated circuits design and testing, design of software systems for VLSI integrated circuits, analogue and pulse electronic circuits and systems, microprocessor and digital systems, digital signal processing of biomedical signals, photoacoustics, artificial intelligence methods, soft computing and fuzzy logic, computer forensics. Our activities in these fields are hardware oriented and devoted to practical applications in medicine, radar, wireless communication systems, distributed environment-monitoring systems, high energy physics experiments and others. The Institute has developed a network of modern teaching and research laboratories. It creates a strong basis for our staff to perform and fulfill research programs for the Polish industry and within the European research programs. The continuing program of expansion and development of the Institute is driven by 12 professors (including 5 full professors), 6 researches with Ph.D., D.Sc. degree, 39 with Ph.D. degree and 10 with M.Sc. degree. In addition, in our research activities participate 38 Ph.D. students sponsored and guided by the Professors of the Institute. In 2009, 3 researchers obtained the Doctor of Science degree (D.Sc.) and 5 Doctor degree (Ph.D.). Members of the Institute staff are devoted researchers. In 2009 they published 10 scientific and teaching books and book chapters, 142 journal papers and 54 papers in conference proceedings. Some of the professors are worldwide recognized authorities and act as reviewers of papers published in many leading international journals and conferences. For their outstanding achievements in research and teaching, academics of the Institute have gained in 2009, 8 Awards of the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology and 1 Award of the Rector of Medical University of Warsaw and six other awards. Each year the Institute organizes the IEEE-SPIE Multi-Symposia: on Advanced Electronics and Photonics in Wilga, and on Digital Signal Processing and Radar Signal Processing in Jachranka. These scientific events are dedicated mainly to Ph.D. students and young researchers. In 2009 over 200 participants presented their papers at these Symposia. The Institute co-organizes also the annual National Conference on Evolutionary Algorithms and Global Optimization. This Conference integrates academics and researchers from many universities and science centers, and is considered the most important scientific event in Poland in this field. - 5-

6 Professors of our Institute teach 65 different courses. Many of teaching activities are performed in our well-equipped laboratories such as Electronics for High Energy Physics Laboratory, Bioengineering Laboratory, Digital Signal Processing Laboratory, RF & Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuits Laboratory and others. We have also a research laboratory which develops electronic measurement and control systems for free-electron laser FLASH and the European X-Ray Laser project XFEL at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY, Hamburg, Germany. The Institute of Electronic Systems membership in TESLA Technology Collaboration may result in participation in large European and worldwide research programs on accelerator development. I believe that students who come to our Institute are joining a dynamic, expanding and lively institution. Our Institute has been known for years as a friendly place with good relations between staff and students, and also for high standards in education and research. A good proof of this statement is dynamic and successful activity of four student research groups: Digital Signal Processing and Radar Systems Group, Electronics for High Energy Physics Group, Biocybernetics Group, and Digital and Pulse Technology Group, guided by our staff. Our achievements are possible due to strong involvement of the academic and administration staff. I appreciate this opportunity to express my cordial thanks to our staff, students and friends who identify themselves with our goals. I also hope that our achievements presented in this report will serve as a stimulation for new European and domestic industrial and research partners to initiate and exploit the Institute potential in education, research and engineering. The Director Professor Jerzy Szabatin, Ph.D., D.Sc. - 6-
