Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, Lubicz 46, PL Kraków, Poland; godzik@ib-pan.krakow.pl This landmark day in the life of Krystyna Grodzi ska finds her still busily engaged in scientific research, teaching and organizational work, in a career which began nearly five decades ago. One of a select group of distinguished Polish ecologists, she is known and held in high repute throughout the scientific community in Poland and abroad. Krystyna Grodzi ska (nee Chronowska) was born in Lwów on May 27, 1934, where she spent her early childhood. During the Nazi occupation she lived in Bukowsko near Sanok, where she attended primary school. After World War II the Chronowski family moved to Kraków, and from then on her life was to be intimately tied to this town. After completing secondary school, she began studies at the Pedagogical University, and then studied biology ( ) in the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the Jagiellonian University (Figs 1 3). She received her Master of Science degree on the basis of a thesis entitled Meadow Flora of the Southern Part of Guba ówka Hill, which was prepared in the Department of Plant Systematics and Geography under the guidance of Professor Dr. Bogumi Paw owski. In 1957 she married W adys aw Grodzi ski (Fig. 2), later professor at the Jagiellonian University, who died in Krystyna Grodzi ska has two children: Piotr (Fig. 4) (Ph.D., Materials Science & Engineering, University of Southern California, U.S.A.) and Ma gorzata (Ph.D., Biology, Jagiellonian University). She has three grandchildren, to whom she is very devoted. Every stage of Krystyna Grodzi ska s scientific career have been connected with the Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which she joined in April She worked first as a technical assistant, then as a junior assistant researcher (1959) and senior assistant researcher Fig. 1. In 1962 she received her doctoral degree in natural sciences (IB PAS), defending a thesis entitled Meadow and Field Communities of Guba ówka Hill. From 1964 to 1976 she worked in the Department of Plant Ecology and Geography as a lecturer. She achieved the rank of habilitated doctor in 1976 with her dissertation entitled Flora and Vegetation of Skalice Nowotarskie and Spiskie in the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the Jagiellonian University (Fig. 5). From that time to 1985, Krystyna Grodzi ska held the position of assistant professor in the Department of Plant Ecology and Geography of the Institute of Botany (PAS), then headed by Professor Kazimierz Zarzycki. She was granted tenure in 1985 and took up the post of associate professor ( ) and then professor in the Department of Ecology of the Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences. Professor Grodzi ska s scientific output comprises nearly 250 publications, listed here. Many of them have sparked great interest, are cited frequently in the literature, and have led to invitations to collaborate with national and international scientific institutions. One can distinguish two periods and two areas of interest in Krystyna Grodzi ska s research. From the beginning of her work in the Institute of Botany until the early 1970s, she focused on geobotany (floristics, phytogeography, phytosociology), and later she turned to ecological problems (environmental pollution, biominitoring). Kivishima, May first period, Professor Grodzi ska was engaged in studies of plant communities, mostly in the Carpathians: floristically differentiated meadow, field, forest and xerothermic communities, as well as communities of field weeds. She conducted geobotanical studies on Guba ówka Hill, in Spisz, in the Bukowica Range in the Beskid Niski Mountains, and in the area of Skalice Nowotarskie and Skalice Spiskie. Her study of Skalice Nowotarskie and Skalice Spiskie yielded a monograph of its flora and natural vegetation, as well as a map of the natural and potential vegetation of the Kramnica and Ob azowa nature reserves in the Bia ka River gorge. She participated in team research on the vegetation of the Pieniny National Park and of the Jaszcze and Jamne valleys in the Gorce Mountains. During this time, under the guidance of Professor Bogumi Paw owski she also took part in compiling Flora polska. Ro liny naczyniowe Polski i Ziem O ciennych (The Flora of Poland). Her contributions to this venture were taxonomical descriptions of 50 species from 26 genera, primarily from the families of Boraginaceae, Labiatae, Cucurbitaceae, Asclepiadaceae and Compositae. The second phase of her scientific work spans the time from the early 1970s to the present day (Figs 6 11). It involves identifying qualitative and quantitative changes in ecosystems, the unwanted results of rapid industrial development. Southern Poland, with its concentration of factories that for many years had very few environmental protection measures in place, was an excellent area for that type of study. The beginning of this work was a search for suitable methods for determining levels of environmental pollution, using plants as bioindicators. The first pioneer studies of this type in Poland concerned the effect of sulphur dioxide emissions on the ph of tree bark and the sulphur content of pine needles in highly industrialized areas such as Kraków and Lubin. These studies showed that acid pollutants harmed vegetation and reduced biological diversity not only in heavily polluted regions but also in northeastern Poland, which is considered a clean

5 B. GODZIK & K. ZARZYCKI: AN APPRECIATION OF PROF. K. GRODZI SKA 11 region. Later on, Professor Grodzi ska began to study heavy metal deposition and heavy metal pollution in national parks. These were the first studies in Poland to use plants as bioindicators. These studies were repeated several times; together they provide a picture of successive changes in the environment. They were abundantly cited in the literature. Using mosses as bioindicators, in the 1990s Professor Grodzi ska studied heavy metal deposition throughout Poland, under international research programs. She used lichens and mosses to assess the apparently clean environment of the Arctic tundra in the region of Hornsund Fjord in Spitsbergen, and in other areas of the far north. This work showed that transboundary emissions reach these distant areas as well, and that research stations are a significant source of contamination of polar regions. This comprehensive research resulted in many publications in national and international journals, and chapters of a major work on forest ecosystems in industrial regions. The Niepo omice Forest again became an object of studies on forest ecosystem contamination at the end of the 1990s. Comprehensive research on biogeochemical cycles of micro- and macroelements was carried out by Professor Grodzi ska and her team in the Ratanica basin of the Pogórze Wielickie foothills. This work was done first in cooperation with Swedish scientists, and later under two grants from the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research. In these studies, the annual cycling of particular elements was calculated. It was determined which elements were accumulated in the ecosystem, and which escaped the ecosystem s control, threatening its normal functioning. This work added much to

Professor Grodzi ska is the author of many scientific and popular articles on heavy metal concentrations in fruits and vegetables cultivated in urban allotment gardens. These studies, spanning almost 20 years, have documented changes associated with decreasing industrial emissions. They have provided useful recommendations for Kraków inhabitants about how to grow, prepare and cook fruits and vegetables grown on city plots. The work has also helped municipal government bodies to properly designate areas for cultivation of vegetables. In the 1990s Professor Grodzi ska was a team leader in international programs concerned with determining levels of ozone in the Carpathians and its effect on plants (Fig. 11). Ecological studies conducted in recent years on calamine mine spoils in the environs of Olkusz and Bukowno have combined her interests in heavy metals and in floristic studies. These papers focus mainly on the spontaneous succession of vegetation and on how plants adapt to heavy metal contamination of the soil and a scarcity of nutrients and water in the substratum. Professor Grodzi ska s career combines scientific and administrative work. In she was Vice-Director of the Department of Ecology of the Institute of Botany. In she ran the Institute of Botany s Doctoral Studies program for botany and environment conservation theory, and in she was Vice-Director for Scientific Affairs of the Institute. In she headed the Laboratory of Environmental Ecology within the Department of Ecology, and from 2001 until her retirement in 2004 she was head of the Department. She is a member of the Scientific Board of the Institute of Botany, and in was President of the Board. During a scientific career spanning almost half a century, Professor Grodzi ska has performed many functions outside the Institute. Among the most important is membership in many scientific councils of Polish Academy of Sciences units (Institute of Dendrology, Institute of Ecology, Institute of Nature Conservation, Botanical Garden in Powsin), the Bia owie a National Park, the State

GRODZI SKA 13 Council for Environmental Protection and others, as well as serving on Polish Academy of Sciences scientific commissions (Committee on Nature Conservation, Committee on Ecology, Committee on Botany, Committee on Polar Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences Presidium, the Polish National Committee for IGBP Global Change, Committee Man and Environment ). She was also a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences Board of Scientific Institutions, and the Biological, Earth Sciences and Environmental Protection Unit of the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN). Professor Grodzi ska is a member of many national and international scientific associations, and serves on the editorial boards of many Polish and foreign journals, including Environmental Pollution, Polish Botanical Studies, Fragmenta Floristica et Geobotanica, Fragmenta Floristica et Geobotanica Series Polonica, Wiadomo ci Botaniczne, Polish Journal of Ecology, Botanical Guidebooks and Polish Botanical Journal. Since 1996, Professor Grodzi ska has been a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, and secretary of its Natural Science Class IV. Professor Grodzi ska is a committed teacher as well as a scientist. As early as she taught plant systematics to Jagiellonian University students, and later taught botany and ecology in an intercollegiate program organized by the Institute of Botany of the Jagiellonian University and the Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences ( , ). Under cooperative arrangements with Kraków universities (Jagiellonian University, University of Agriculture, AGH University of Science and Technology, and Kraków University of Technology) and with wi tokrzyski University she lectured on environmental protection ( ), and recently gave lectures for doctoral students in the Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Professor Grodzi ska has successfully acted as faculty advisor to several master s degree candidates, five doctoral candidates and one habilitated doctoral candidate. She has provided reviews and opinions in more than 30 evaluation procedures for doctoral theses, habilitated doctoral theses, and petitions for the title of Fig. 10. Godzik). professor and for the post of professor ordinarius. She has also peer-reviewed more than 140 manuscripts submitted to Polish and foreign journals. Professor Grodzi ska has received a host of awards and distinctions for her scientific achievements. She received the Biological Sciences Award of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Scientific Secretary s Award of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the State Group Award, First Degree. In addition to these awards, Professor Grodzi ska has been honored with the Polonia Restituta Chevalier s Cross, Silver Cross of Merit, Gold Medal for Services to Kraków, W adys aw Szafer Medal, and Polish Academy of Sciences Jubilee Medal. Since the early years of her scientific work, Professor Grodzi ska has enjoyed fruitful contact with foreign institutions, cooperating with 20 different scientific centers. All together she has spent a year and a half on extended study and teaching visits and fellowships. She has made many shorter visits as well, mostly in furtherance of joint research projects, to Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and Ukraine. In 1985 she participated in a summer scientific expedition to the Polish Polar Station on Spitsbergen. She has attended over 30 international congresses and symposia, presenting the results of her studies in the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States; she has organized parts of the programs of these conferences. We who are privileged to work with Professor Krystyna Grodzi ska have more than a diligent, stimulating, steady partner in scientific inquiry. We have a friend who infuses her personality into the everyday work of the Institute, a model of ethical conduct, and a window on the world the world as seen by a person with a sensitive, aesthetic appreciation of the things she finds there. We are indeed fortunate to have such a colleague and teacher.
