2 Dear Participant, Along the conference materials we propose you kind of a back to the future imaginary travel with Ijon Tichy attending Futurological Congress in Corstaricana in the beginning of the 21. century, as described by celebrated Polish science-fi ction novelist, Stanislaw Lem, in his novel, The Futurological Congress, back in Stanislaw Lem ( ) is best known for Solaris, The Star Diaries, The Cyberiad, Mortal Engines. 5 PROLOGUE It is common knowledge that there are two kinds of scholar these days: the stationary and the peripatetic. The stationaries pursue their studies in the traditional way, while their restless colleagues participate in every sort of international seminar and symposium imaginable. The scholar of this second type may be readily identified: in his lapel he wears a card bearing his name, rank and home university, in his pocket sticks a flight schedule of arrivals and departures, and the buckle on his belt as well as the snaps on his briefcase are plastic, never metal, so as not to trigger unnecessarily the alarms of the airport scanners that search boarding passengers for weapons. Our peripatetic scholar keeps up with the literature of his field by studying in buses, waiting rooms, planes and hotel bars. Stacjonarni po staremu prowadzą różne badania, jeżdżący zaś uczestniczą we wszechmożliwych konferencjach i kongresach międzynarodowych. Uczonego tej drugiej grupy łatwo rozpoznać: w klapie nosi zawsze małą wizytówkę z własnym nazwiskiem i stopniem naukowym, w kieszeni rozkłady jazdy linii lotniczych, podpasuje się ściągaczem bez części metalowych, a także jego teczka zamyka się na plastykowy zatrzask wszystko, aby nie uruchamiać niepotrzebnie alarmowej syreny urządzenia, które na lotnisku prześwietla podróżnych i wykrywa broń sieczną oraz palną. 6 Welcome Address 2009 WELCOME ADDRESS 2009 Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Polish Neuroscience Society we have a great pleasure to welcome you all to Warszawa and the Old University Campus. This meeting is already the 9th International Congress of the Polish Neuroscience Society and simultaneously it is the First FENS Featured Regional meeting. This is a new initiative of FENS to give support to national societies aiming to strengthen scientific program of their meetings and make them more international and vivid. Especially, FENS offered stipends which enable young scientists from abroad to participate in the meeting. The Polish Neuroscience Society won the slot to organize such regional meeting. This was a challenge to us as well for FENS, which supported us in shaping scientific and social events. In the next few days you will have the opportunity to experience the effects of our work. At the meeting we host 59 young stipends holders. Among them there are also young scientists which received stipends from their own national societies. Young researchers, we hope that your presence and active voices during all scientific events will make this particular meeting a real forum of exchange of scientific experience and new ideas. We would like to thank the president of FENS Helmut Kettenmann and Eckart Gundelfinger for helping us to construct the scientific program and to invite prominent plenary speakers. Also we would like to thank Meino Gibson from the FENS Office for helping us with management. This meeting is also different than previous meetings in that, that in partnership with The European DANA Alliance for the Brain (EDAB), we included a lecture for the public (in Polish) aiming to increase interest in brain matters among lay audience. There is also a bilingual exhibition on the History of Neuroscience in Poland which accompanies the Meeting, aimed to show, in particular to the young generation, the beginnings of our presence in the world community of neuroscientists. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all of the members of the local organizing committee who have devoted a huge amount of time and effort to make the present congress a memorable event. 19 GENERAL INFORMATION General Information General Information Conference venue The conference venue is an Old Library of the University of Warsaw (26/28 Krakowskie Przedmieście Str.). The Old Library is located in the Old University Campus, in the very centre of the city, close to the Old Town and other tourist attractions (see the map). The building itself is one of the most precious examples of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Warsaw. Originally erected in has been recently extensively renovated and adapted to fulfi ll requirements of a modern conference centre. The interactive panorama of the Old Library can be accessed at Access to the meeting site Public transportation in Warsaw is well developed, reliable and inexpensive. It consists of underground line and a number of bus and tram lines. Conference venue as well as all conference hotels are easily accessible by public transportation. There are convenient bus connections between hotels and the Old Library. The tickets can be bought at newspaper stands and Ticket vending machines in some central locations. There are several kinds of tickets available: single fare (2.80 PLN) or 1-day (9 PLN), 3-days (16 PLN), and 7-days (32 PLN) travelcards. All informations can be found on the ZTM web page: The Congress Venue can be reached from the airport: by bus: regular city bus # 175. The bus stop is just in front of the exit from the airport. Get off at the bus stop Uniwersytet at Krakowskie Przedmieście Str. It takes approximately minutes, but strongly depends on traffi c. by taxi: The licensed taxi can be found just in front of the exit from the airport lobby. DO NOT accept offers from the lobby. It takes approximately minutes to get to the conference venue, depending on traffi c and costs approximately 10 Euro. from the train Central Station and city center by walking (20 min) by bus: regular city bus # 175 in the direction of Pl. Pilsudskiego. The bus stop is at Aleje Jerozolimskie Str, opposite to the Central Station, just by Marriott hotel. Get off at the bus stop Uniwersytet at Krakowskie Przedmieście Str. 20 General Information General Information by tram: 3 tram stops to Charles de Gaulle Rondo, tram stop Muzeum Narodowe, by any tram going in the direction of Praga. Trams go every 1-3 minutes. Then turn left and take any bus going north from the bus stop at Nowy Swiat Str. Go 2 stops and get off at the bus stop Uniwersytet at Krakowskie Przedmieście Str. by taxi: the average cost is 5 Euro. Accommodation Special prices have been negotiated in tree hotels offering accommodation at different price ranges. Hotel Sofi tel Victoria ( tel.com/sofi tel/fi chehotel/gb/sof/3378/fi che_ hotel.shtml) offers high standard accommodation. It is located within walking distance to the conference venue and main tourist attractions including Saxon Gardens, National Opera House and the Old Town. Hotel Ibis ( chehotel/gb/ibi/3714/fi che_ hotel.shtml) is a nice tourist class hotel. It is situated in the city center, near the Old Town and Arkadia the biggest shopping center in Warsaw. Conference venue can be reached following few minutes of bus ride. Hotel Portos ( offers decent economy price accommodation intended for student. It is located approximately 5 km from the conference center and is well connected with public transportation with both, the conference center and all city attractions. Assistance for visitors with disabilities and special needs The Old Library building is equipped with lifts and devices for disabled persons. Please contact the Registration Desk to ask for assistance. Badges Name badges must be visible and used at all times, anywhere at the Congress Venue and Poster Sessions area. Lost badges can be replaced for registered participants presenting an ID. 20 Coat/luggage check There is a coat and luggage check available at the basement level of the building.

21 General Information Bags and satchels other than the offi cial congress bag and/or business satchels will NOT be allowed in the session rooms and inside the Exhibition area. General Information Certificate of attendance A certifi cate of attendance will be included in the Congress bag. Duplication/Recording Any form of recording (audio recording, auto taping, digital taping, photography and video) is prohibited. Permission to do so should be sought from the Congress Organizers. Food and restaurants Old Library is located on the main tourist route in Warsaw, therefore there is large selection of food and restaurants nearby the conference venue. All variety of services can be found - not only luxurious restaurants, but also reasonably priced bistros, cafés, sandwich and salad bars or fast foods. There is a small cafe at the Old Library. In the nearby building of Kazimierzowski Palace there is also a canteen that can be used by participants of the conference. In addition to that, low-price catering is organized in the Old Library for lunches. Coffee, tea and other refreshments will be available during coffee breaks free of charge. Internet Access to the internet is provided within the whole building, as a complimentary service to participants. Please refer to the Registration desk for the Access code. 22 General Information General Information Rules Smoking Policy The Polish Neuroscience Meeting 2009 is a non-smoking event. Participants are kindly requested to refrain form smoking in the Congress venue. Mobile Phones Delegates are kindly requested to keep their mobile phones in the off position in the rooms where scientifi c sessions are being held, as well as in the Internet rooms and during poster sessions. Food Food is not allowed inside the session rooms. Participants may take water bottles. Speakers Preview Room Speakers are asked to provide their presentation to the Speakers Preview Room (2nd. fl oor) the day before the session for morning sessions and at least two hours before the beginning of the session for afternoon sessions. 22
